At your preventive visits we carefully examine not just your teeth, but the gums and supporting tissues, and the entire area inside and around your mouth.
Regular dental cleanings are important, not only for keeping your smile looking attractive and your breath fresh, but for removing the bacterial accumulations (plaque and tartar) that cause cavities and gum disease, to help maintain your oral health.
Digital x-rays allow us to detect cavities and other dental concerns that are not apparent upon visual inspection, while allowing us to greatly reduce the amount of radiation exposure. We customize the interval between x-ray examinations depending on each patient’s susceptibility to developing cavities and gum disease.
Fluoride, when applied to the surfaces of teeth, has been shown to strengthen the enamel, making teeth more resistant to the acids given off by bacteria which cause cavities. We use fluoride treatments routinely on children, and selectively on adults, depending on their specific needs.
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay. Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs on these surfaces. It is best if the sealant is applied soon after the teeth have erupted, before they have a chance to decay. Sealants can last 5 to 10 years or more, but should be checked at regular dental appointments.
